Uptown Rotary sends kids to camp
Two students who submitted application essays were awarded scholarships to beautiful Catalina Island Marine Institute in March. The students were part of a cohort of 24 seventh graders from Longfellow Spanish Immersion Magnet Middle School in Bay Park, San Diego.

For many of the students, the trip included their first boat ride, first high rope swing and first ocean experience. One child tasted her first scone at breakfast, thanks to unnamed chaperones who sneaked "adults-only" food to the kids.
For too many children, this trip held their first swim in the ocean and their first interaction with marine life. Some had never sat around a campfire before.
We are humbled to have provided this experience and are thrilled with the memories they made during Spring Break 2017.

"A gentleman is one who never hurts anyone's feelings unintentionally." ~Oscar Wilde

Oscar may have passed Rotary's Four Way Test. However, more research is needed, so we have the perfect place to discuss the finer points of being Rotarians, humanitarians and patriots.

As always, Service Above Self and Country Before Party.

April Balge wed Isaac Adames at the beautiful seaside resort of Coronado Cays.

On February 19, family and friends gathered to see them say "I do." Celebration ensued and the couple are happily honeymooning in an undisclosed location.
We wish them many happy and healthy years together.

December 1st: District Governor Marilyn Sanderson and Steve Nuñez inspired Uptown Rotary with tales of service.
Marilyn is a fabulous speaker and it was a joy to host her and Steve. In case you missed their visit, she spoke of the rampant lack of basic necessities of life in Kenya observed during a service trip. The only cooking implements at a school where children received much of their daily nutrition were donated by the local Rotary. Without Rotary, the children would have little or no lunch and no hope. Rotary gives hope. Hope is why we fund Polio vaccines in Asia, elementary school improvements in Nicaragua, and apartments for homeless seniors here in San Diego.
Your Holiday Party ticket will be matched 100% (up to $2,500) to completely furnish 5 apartments for homeless seniors in San Diego through St. Paul's PACE program! Tickets are here.

Happy Thanksgiving - we are dark on Nov 24, 2016.

Uptown Rotary is happy to be honoring the life-changing community service that has been made possible over the past 100 years through the Rotary Foundation and the more than 33,000 clubs across the world. We are proud to have partnered with the Rotary Foundation to fund several projects both in our community and internationally in places like Uganda, Mexico and Nicaragua.
Throughout this year, members of our club are celebrating our commitment to "Service Above Self" by striving to provide 100 hours of community and club service through our "100 for 100 Challenge." Each member will track their hours using the Four Way Test as our guide.
We hope you will be inspired to join us and take part in the spirit of the Rotary Foundation's mission of "Doing Good in the World." If you'd like to give back to your community or are interested international service, Uptown Rotary would be happy to have you join us for our breakfast meetings or one of our upcoming service projects. Check our calendar for upcoming events or our Facebook for more information.
We are deeply grateful to Rotarian Terry Gardner of Terry Allen Gardner Creative Services for creating our wonderful emblem. Thank you!!

Uptown Rotary had another amazing fundraising weekend at the annual Gator By the Bay- Zydeco, Blues and Crawfish Festival. Each year, our club pours beer at the event to help raise money to support our service projects in the community.
For more information on the event and some pictures of some of our fabulous crew, check out our Facebook page or click on the "Read More" button below.
On April 21st, former State Senator Christine Kehoe spoke with our Rotary Club about California's Plug-In Electric Vehicle (PEV)Collaborative. After a successful nineteen years in public office, Kehoe joined the PEV Collaborative in 2013 and was appointed to the California Transportation Commission in January 2016.
Kehoe shared information and resources on new and emerging technology that will allow PEVs to become a much more feasible and affordable solution for more people in the near future. Including, drum roll please, a MINIVAN! For more information on PEVs and the work of the PEV Collaborative, check out their website:

Uptown Rotary is proud to announce Liam Dunphy as our newest member.

Liam works for St. Pauls' Senior Center and is a long time friend of current member, Megan O'Dowd.  Liam and Megan attended college together at Elmira College in Upstate New York.

We welcome Liam to Uptown Rotary and look forward to his active participation.

At Uptown Rotary's regular morning meeting last week we had the honor of hosting speaker City Council Member Todd Gloria.
Gloria spoke on several pertinent topics, including rising water rates, transportation planning, easing the parking problem in the city and homelessness.   Thank you Mr. Gloria for coming to our meeting.  We really enjoyed your presentation and hope you will come to future meetings.
Mark your calendars for the annual San Diego Uptown Rotary Holiday Party, Wednesday, December 9th at 57 Degrees Club from 6-9.  You can purchase tickets to the event ($30 for one or $50 for two) at the Eventbrite address for the event.  The proceeds from tickets sales will be donated to The International Rescue Committee (IRC), which assists refugees coming to the United States from abroad.
Please share this invitation to your friends and invite them to Uptown Rotary's Holiday Party.  We hope to see you all there.
Last week's fund raiser at the ARTS facility in National City was heavily attended and raised lots of money.  As previously reported, the ARTS program, which stands for A Reason To Survive, was established to at risk youth in National City and get them off the streets and into the arts.  We look forward to many more ARTS events.
