Uptown Rotary sends kids to camp

Two students who submitted application essays were awarded scholarships to beautiful Catalina Island Marine Institute in March. The students were part of a cohort of 24 seventh graders from Longfellow Spanish Immersion Magnet Middle School in Bay Park, San Diego.

For many of the students, the trip included their first boat ride, first high rope swing and first ocean experience. One child tasted her first scone at breakfast, thanks to unnamed chaperones who sneaked "adults-only" food to the kids.

For too many children, this trip held their first swim in the ocean and their first interaction with marine life. Some had never sat around a campfire before.

We are humbled to have provided this experience and are thrilled with the memories they made during Spring Break 2017.

Oscar may have passed Rotary's Four Way Test. However, more research is needed, so we have the perfect place to discuss the finer points of being Rotarians, humanitarians and patriots.

Uptown Rotary is happy to be honoring the life-changing community service that has been made possible over the past 100 years through the Rotary Foundation and the more than 33,000 clubs across the world. We are proud to have partnered with the Rotary Foundation to fund several projects both in our community and internationally in places like Uganda, Mexico and Nicaragua.

We hope you will be inspired to join us and take part in the spirit of the Rotary Foundation's mission of "Doing Good in the World." If you'd like to give back to your community or are interested international service, Uptown Rotary would be happy to have you join us for our breakfast meetings or one of our upcoming service projects. Private Water Companies in San Diego County

At last week's regular Uptown Rotary meeting Kevin Tilden of the California American Water Company enlightened Uptown Rotarians about the water industry.  Most of the people at the meeting had no idea that there were private water companies.  Mr. Tilden informed us that his company provides water for Coronado, Imperial Beach and 10,000 homes in the city of San Diego.  He said that customers of his company are incentivized to promote conservation.  Thank you Mr. Tilden for informing us about the private water industry.  Below is a picture of Kevin Tilden with Uptown Rotarian Don Taylor.

Uptown Rotary Holiday Party December 9th
Please take a moment and purchase your tickets to our Rotary Holiday Party. We will be raising money in support of the International Rescue Committee. They’re a great organization that is very active in assisting refugees in San Diego. If you’re unable to make it, there is also an option to just donate money to the organization. They are currently looking for assistance in purchasing laptops at a cost of $150-$175 each. I’d encourage everyone to pass this information along to those people who you know are friends of Rotary and those who are looking for a way to help refugees in our community.

A festive evening of fun, friendship and charity awaits! It’s what we do best. J

At last week's regular morning Uptown Rotary meeting, Keith Padgett, CEO of PRO Kids and The First Tee, told us how golf can make a big difference in a kids life.  His organization is a nonprofit that uses golf as a metaphor for life.  PRO stands for points, rewards and opportunity where underpriviliged kids can play golf in the City Heights area of San Diego.  When they play golf they earn rewards that they can use to purchase golf clubs and other things they need to play the game.  The First Tee is supported by the PGA, serves 1,800 kids per year and offers college scholarships.  What a great organization!

AIDS Walk event was fun and successful

The recent annual AIDS Walk event in San Diego brought out thousands to march and raise money to help the cause of AIDS prevention.  The Tish Grabsky Uptown Rotary AIDS Walk team had 8 or 9 members walking to help keep Tish's name alive.  The team raised over $1,700 and Uptown Rotarian Megan O'Dowd came in first for the women who ran in the half marathon.  Congratulations Megan and thank you for helping to organize the event.  I am sure Tish would be proud of her Uptown Rotarians.

Inspiring Speaker Samuel Nehemiah at Uptown Rotary

At last weeks Uptown Rotary we had the honor and privilidge of hearing Mr. Samuel Nehemiah with the Challenged Athletes Foundation.  Mr. Nehemiah's tear-jerking story started in his native Nigeria when he was 4 years old and contracted polio.  In his small village, kids with diseases like polio were considered outcasts and were treated by voodoo doctors instead of medical doctors.  Samuel's parents sent him off to an institution where, he says, it was hoped he would die.  But he was so determined to get an education that he walked two miles to school on his hands and knees.  Then, he said, an amazing thing happened.  The local Rotary club in his country provided a bus to transport the kids to school.  He sure remembered what a great organization Rotary was as he no longer had to crawl to school.  When he went out to play with the kids at recess they noticed how skilled Samuel was and they entered him into the Special Olympics.  He received gold medals in many events and became an example to all how one person can overcome these seemingly monumental challenges. Coincidentally, Nigeria is one-year polio free.  There have been no new cases of polio in Nigeria for over a year.  We are anxiously waiting for the three year mark to arrive, at which time Nigeria and all of Africa will be polio-free.  Below is a picture of Uptown Rotarians Pat Taylor and Megan O'Dowd with Samuel Nehemiah and his lovely girlfriend Courtnee Sherman.

Dreams for Change event was well-attended

About two weeks ago Uptown Rotary held its quarterly Dreams for Change event with dinner and lots of back-to-school items for the kids.  Dreams for Change is a safe environment for those unfortunate people and families who have lost their homes and sleep in their cars.  It is in a church parking lot off of the 94 Fwy. on 28th and Market Streets with a gated parking lot for them to have a safe and sanitary place to sleep.  We were told that there is a waiting list of 50 people who want to stay there.  Uptown Rotary is honored to be able to help these unfortunate people and has high hopes for them to get out of the cycle of homelessness.

At last weeks regular Thursday morning meeting, James Floros, President and CEO of the Jacobs & Cushman San Diego Food Bank, gave a lively presentation about his organization.  He said they serve over 370,000 people monthly in San Diego County and over 22 million pounds of food was distributed by the Food Bank in fiscal year 2013-2014.  They distribute backpacks full of food to 1,433 elementary schoolchildren to take home for the weekend due to the lack of food at their homes during the weekend. He said over 25% of the nation's active duty military and reserve personnel rely on food banks for assistance.  Below is a picture of Mr. Floros with Uptown Rotarian Terry Gardner.

All Enjoyed the Salk Institute Tour

Last Thursday Uptown Rotary and friends had a unique opportunity to tour the Salk Institute in
San Diego.  The architectural tour highlighted the beautiful edifice, the football field-sized laboratories used by the scientists there, and the forward-thinking of Jonas Salk who designed the building 50 years ago to be sustainable and energy-efficient.  The research tour was in the stem cell laboratory where we actually were able to see live stem cells being harvested.  What a fascinating and enjoyable experience for all those in attendance.  Below are a few pictures of the facility.

Ralph Dimarucut speaks at Uptown Rotary

At last week's Thursday morning meeting of Uptown Rotary, Ralph Dimarucut, from City Council member Marti Emerald's office, spoke about the taxi industry in San Diego.  Specifically, Ralph mentioned that the taxi industry is better off with Uber and Lyft because it makes taxis more efficient and levels the playing field for all drivers.  The reason why he spoke about this issue is because of the large number of taxi drivers in Councilwoman Marti Emerald's district.  We appreciate you speaking at our meeting last week Mr. Dimarucut.  Below is a picture of Ralph with a number of Uptown Rotarians.

Nigeria Polio-Free for One Year

Rotary can take pride in the fact that recent news out of Nigeria indicates that the country has been polio-free for one year.  This is very exciting because, previously, Nigeria was the only country in Africa that was reporting new cases of polio.  Nigeria must be polio-free for three years for it to be technically declared free from polio.  But the one-year benchmark is something Rotarians can be proud of.

At Uptown Rotary's last regular morning meeting Rotarian Louis Dewey from Dunsmore Rotary paid us a visit.  Mr. Dewey, father of Uptown Rotarian D' Arcy Dewey, said he felt very comfortable at our meeting because his  Rotary club in Dunsmore has the same number of members, about 20, as our club.   The smaller Rotary clubs tend to be more intimate and personal then the larger clubs, some of which have
hundreds of members.  Below is a picture of Louis Dewey with daughter D' Arcy and Danny Daugherty.

The San Diego Foundation ARTS Event was outstanding

The recent event sponsored by the San Diego Foundation at the ARTS facility in National City was attended by Uptown Rotarian Lance Margolin.  The ARTS facility, which is an acronym for A Reason To Survive, is in the former public library building in National City and functions as a place for underprivilaged and challenged youth to gather and express themselves through the arts.  At the facility the youth can engage in music, art, sculpture, furniture making and other constructive activities to engage their creativity.  Uptown Rotary supports this great organization and Sean Donnelly sits on its Board of Directors.   The center promotes creativity through sustainability.  For instance, the furniture the kids make is from all second-hand and refurbished materials and the paper they use for their art projects is actually made from used clothing that is mixed in a solution and reconditioned into paper.  What a great place for these kids to gather and express themselves.

Speaker from Deep Space Industries Discusses Space Exploration

At Uptown Rotary's last regular Thursday morning meeting, Sagi Kfir, General Counsel from Deep Space Industries, talked about the future and space exploration.  Mr. Kfir discussed space resource utilization in the commercial space industry.  He said small satellites are democratizing space.  These satellites are being used to build broadban in places like Africa which currently is unable to get the internet.  He also mentioned that the billionaires in the space exploration game, like Richard Branson, Paul Allen and Jeff Bezos, will be the first trillionaires  on the planet.  They will acquire this wealth through mining space-based resources like gold, platinum, uranium, etc. from the lunar surface and from asteroids.  He said that the Outer Space Treaty of 1967 is like the Magna Carta of space law, stating that countries can't own real property in space but can own personal property.   Below is a picture of Sagi Kfir(on the right) with Uptown Rotary President David Lang.

At Uptown Rotary's last regular Thursday morning meeting we learned all about the beautiful art of Bonsai tree crafting.  Mr. Abe Farr, the president of the Golden State Bonsai Assn., showed us the intricacies of making and maintaining bonsais.  According to him, bonsai is Japanese living art which requires just the right measurement of ph for the water, mix the soil from gravel, pumice, clay, and 10 percent wood bark and leaves and fertilize every other week.   Thank you Sean Donnelly for inviting Mr. Farr to speak.  Below is a picture of Mr. Farr with bonsai.

Hanohano Outrigger competition a great success

The Hanohano Outrigger Paddle competition last Saturday at Crown Point was a lot of fun.  Uptown Rotary entered two teams into the race.  The team called "Off Like a Prom Dress" consisted of Uptown Rotarians Megan O'Dowd, Anita Darling and April Balge.  The second team, called "No Average Joes," had Rotarians Lance Margolin and Shelly Tregembo and others to paddle.  The "No Average Joes" won their first heat, which consisted of three boats competing against eachother.  We unfortunately did let the win get to our heads, thinking we were pretty hot stuff, and in  the second heat we got creamed and came in last.    We wanted to get Lauri Stock on our boat as a ringer but Lauri was busy making sure that the event ran smooth.  It did thanks to her leadership.  Thanks Lauri for a fun time.  Below is a picture of the fearless Uptown Rotarian Hanohano Paddle teams.

Ronald McDonald House Dinner on Sunday, April 19th

Uptown Sunrise Rotary's quarterly service project to serve dinner to the families staying at the San Diego Ronald McDonald House will be on Sunday, April 19th.  We will prepare an on-site dinner for those unfortunate families who have children visiting the facility for healthcare services.   We decided that we will use the kitchen there to prepare the meal we are going to serve.  It has not been decided yet what kind of food we are going to prepare.  This topic is open for future discussion.  In the past, this project has been very well-received by the families who we have served and this event surely will be one not to be missed.

Tish Grabski's Memorial Tree Planting

Friends of Tish:
As you all know, we lost our dear Tish one year ago.  Her absence is deeply felt by all who knew and loved her.
Her friends at the Uptown Sunrise Rotary Club will be honoring Tish’s memory, her energy and her passion by planting a tree for Arbor Day in front of the War Memorial Building, in Balboa Park, off of Park Blvd. Please mark your calendar and save April 24th, from 10-12pm.
We hope all can join in celebrating Tish by attending the planting.
The cost of the planting is modest; $500.  But we thought we would use this opportunity to ask for donations for the tree and to kick off the 2015 AIDS Walk Fund Drive.  AIDS Walk was a particular passion of Tish’s and we want to keep her energy and her memory alive by working hard to raise money for this cause.
If you donate for the planting, any money received in excess of the cost will be donated to AIDS Walk, Friends of Rotary team in Tish’s name.
Donations are being collected by Megan O’Dowd
Phone: 619.772.2309
Address: 3455 Adams Avenue Unit 5 San Diego, CA 92116
Please spread the word about Tish’s Tree and the opportunity to honor Tish’s memory by making Friends of Rotary the top fund-raising AIDS Walk team for 2015.
With gratitude,
Uptown Sunrise Rotary Club

Nicaragua Service Project with New Jersey Rotary Club

San Diego Uptown Goes Back to School in Nicaragua

Megan O’Dowd, 4-month old Finn, Shelly Tregembo, Kyle Sand and Anita Darling travelled to Granada, Nicaragua to meet a grant awardee, Mariela Hernandez. Mariela is a teacher and Masters of Education student who submitted a Rotary grant application for a kitchen, library and gardening program at two pilot schools, Escuela Comunitario Mercedes Mondragon (“Mondragon”) and Luis Peña elementary school, both in an impoverished neighborhood. Part of the $35,000 grant will ensure that the school children receive at least one healthy meal each weekday, and that the government funds for lunch food remain with the intended recipients.

The current school lunch system at Mondragon gives delegated cooks a weekly allowance of raw ingredients to cook and deliver to the school for specific classrooms. Because of the severe poverty of the area, much of the food does not make it back to the children at school. The new kitchen (and corresponding food policies) will ensure that school food stays on the school property and is served to the children. Because of the “boots on the ground” nature of the visit, it was found that the security of the K-12 school is incomplete due to a missing fourth wall (This quickly became a primary consideration.) Of note, the per capita income in Nicaragua is roughly $1,500 USD and a paltry 5% of children attend secondary school (grades 7-12 are not mandatory and most teenagers are put to work to supplement family incomes.)

The San Diego group joined members of sister Rotary clubs from New Jersey, North Carolina and Granada, Nicaragua. Together, they painted every classroom at Luis Peña elementary school and then later socialized over pizza with the local Rotary club of Granada. One lucky gent from Arizona met members from four US states at his make-up meeting in Nicaragua! Club flags were flying all over the place, as camera flashes popped from the local paparazzi.

San Diego Uptown also met the mayor of Granada, and visited vocational and social programs, including former grant awardees, in neighboring areas. The Sonrisa Café and Tio Antonio’s hammock shop train and employ the deaf, mute and blind. The Inhijambia (een-ee-HAHM-Bee-ah) Center for abused children, the Pedals for Progress bicycle program and the Axayactl (ah-ha-YAHK-tuhl) shelter for abused women are actively making positive imprints in their communities to protect, educate and empower victims, as well as the disenfranchised and destitute, in Granada. If you have never travelled the world with San Diego Uptown Rotary, there is always an upcoming service trip to help others in our fun and adventurous group!

Tish Grabski Memorial Tree Planting

This is a follow-up to last week's bulletin announcing Uptown Rotary's plan to honor and memorialize our beloved Tish Grabski who passed away last year.  The total cost to plant the tree is $500 and hopefully we can raise the funds among our members.  Lauri Stock had a great idea for us to raise the money needed from all who loved and cherished Tish's friendship and her unending desire to be of service.  Lauri has volunteered to send an email with a donation request template attached to all Uptown Rotary members who can send it out to your friends and family to help raise the funds.  Lauri can be contacted at lstock@swsslaw.com.   Thanks Lauri.

As mentioned in last weeks bulletin, Uptown Rotary members had an opportunity to attend a dinner and talent show at the offices of Partnership with Industry last Thursday evening.  Pat and Don Taylor and Lance Margolin from our Uptown Rotary Club were there to help serve food and observe the talent show presented by PWI clients.  As Pat, Don and Lance will attest, the talent show was quite entertaining and remarkable.  Debbie Kempinski, the Development Director with PWI, showed us around the facility and illustrated how helpful they are in helping businesses succeed in San Diego.

2013 Pass the Buck Party a Huge Success

On Saturday June 29th we celebrated the handing over of the Presidency from Megan O'Dowd to Terry Gardner.  Many members came to celebrate the ending of Megan's term and moving into Terry's.  We featured a Rotary member trivia segment in which fun and interesting facts were given about each member.  With no one knowing the answers, we had a great time seeing who could guess correctly.  We also had a member baby photo contest.  We had 13 baby photos and tested everyone to see if they could tell who was who.  The winner of the contest with five correct answers was Renee Jones.  A hopeful soon to be club member.  The runner-up was Pat Taylor coming in at four correct answers.  Everyone had a lot of laughs trying to figure it out.

Megan was thanked for her service with several gifts submitted by fellow Rotarians.  Personal had written notes and cards with encased in a beautiful wooden box made by our own Don Taylor.  Many of the comments submitted were the cause of much laughter.

Here is looking forward to a great new year.
